ARE “THE GYPSIES” TAKING OVER HACKENSACK?

Bookmark and Share
Well… we don’t know about that, but the new band “Inner Gypsy,” is starting to become a strong local presence in the community.

In fact, they will be performing at the brand new Hackensack Performing Arts Center (HacPac) on February 12, as part of the Randy G Music Valentines Day trio of concerts on the 12th, 13th and 14th.

When asked which kind of music they play, Mario Vickram Sen, guitarist and singer with the band, responded, “You know what Duke Ellington said — There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind ... the only yardstick by which the result should be judged is simply that of how it sounds — I personally believe,” he continued, “that too much is made of which specific market a band fits into. Is it blues? Is it jazz? Is it pop? — Well, yes! It is all of those things, at moments, and at other moments it resounds with echoes of Latin music, Afro-pop, Irish ballads, and even Indian ragas.”

It is true that the micro classification of genres of music is a fairly recent thing driven by the rise of gigantic corporate record companies and radio stations needing to control and classify the output of their merchandize. Unfortunately, those with eclectic musical tastes have often been left out in the cold, and their choices reduced to those types of music manufactured to generate higher profit margins.

Well, good news, there are still bands for whom the purity of the music is not built around marketing, but around passionate songwriting, quality arrangements, and musical proficiency. And Inner Gypsy is leading that charge back to a time when music was performed for the love of the music.

It won’t matter what your preferred genre of music is, if you like to see good music, you will enjoy Inner Gypsy.

Tiffany Sen, who is the flute player and vocalist with the band added, “When people ask us what type of music we play, we like to say — Worldbeat, pop, rock, folk, blues and jazz… with a gypsy soul.”

Well, that’s quite a mouthful… but if you want to get an earful – come on down to HacPac, 102 State Street, Hackensack, NJ, on February 12.
